The Cary Library offers a wide variety of materials. Our library contains over 35,000 books, 300 books on audio cassette, 1,300 video tapes, 100 different periodicals, and a small collection of musical selections.

Books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System. Audio and video cassettes are numerically numbered according to acquisition. Books, periodicals and audio materials circulate for two weeks, and may be renewed. Fines for late books, and audio materials are five cents per item, per day. Videos circulate for one day free, and may not be renewed. Fines for videos accumulate at $1.00 per video, per day. If you have difficulty finding an item, our staff members will be more than willing to assist you.

In addition to the basic fiction, nonfiction and reference categories of titles that we offer to our patrons, we have many smaller collections of materials grouped by subject, reading level, or material. These special collections include:

The Genealogy Room

Our genealogy room offers people from across the United States and New Brunswick valuable information for finding who their ancestors are and for researching our local history. Items in our genealogy room do not circulate and are always on hand for reference. We have recently purchased a new reader-printer for our microfilm materials and genealogists enjoy a separate room set-aside form the rest of the collection with easy access to our photocopier. Some of the resources contained in our genealogy room include:

We have recently done some upgrading in our Genealogy Room. We have a new microfilm reader-printer to supplement the old one. We also have a computer with a CD-ROM jukebox to accomodate our growing collection of multimedia genealogy records.

The Maine Collection is located in a cozy section of the library set aside from the rest of the building and overlooking Houlton's Civil War Monument.

Large Print Books

For those who find it difficult to read conventional print books, we offer Large Print Books. These titles are very popular with our older patrons and those with vision problems. Currently we try to order our new best-selling fiction titles in regular as well as in the large print and audio formats.

Our ever-expanding selection of audio books is perfect for those on the road, at work, or simply taking a break from everything. We currently provide over 300 books on audio-cassette. We try to purchase our most popular titles in both printed and audio formats. Our patrons have been very good to us in donating their used audio books, as they are quite expensive. The Children's Library

The Children's Library is located upstairs, in the original Carnegie building. It underwent renovations in 1994 to better suit it for its new role as the children's library. The funding for these renovations was realized through Earle J. Starkey, for whom the room is dedicated. Children will find the area brightly lit with a very inviting atmosphere.

Materials in the children's library are arranged by reading level and author.

Children's Programs

Story Hour

During the school year we hold a Children's Craft and Story Time for kids of all ages.

Summer Reading Program

During the summer months, we hold a Summer Reading Program for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. Kids set a goal of books to read for the summer. The kids in the program choose books to read at home. When they have finished the books, they bring them to the library and report on them, receiving a piece of candy for each book read. During the program, prizes are given out. At the completion of the program, if the kids have met their goals, they are given an invitation to a party at the end of the summer with more prizes, snacks and games.
